Vitamin D

All of a sudden the past couple years the medical world has jumped on this one. Funny how most doctors tell us we don’t need to take vitamins – just eat good. Now they give prescriptions for vitamin D. So I guess that’s all we need???

Vitamin D deficiencies can lead to calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphate and zinc deficiencies. All of which can lead to skeletal disease, autoimmune, metabolic issues, cancer, all sorts of infections, even cognitive disorders.

Vitamin D is a fat soluble vitamin not only received from the sun, but also in foods. D2 is in plant based foods, and D3 is in foods such as egg yolks, fatty fish, liver, cod liver oil. Our government also thought it was healthier for us all to eat vegetable oils instead of animal shortening. Now all of a sudden we are all vitamin D deficient. Hmm. I guess that canola oil ain’t working!!!

D3 can be made internally when exposed to the sun. So let’s think about this. We are always covered in sunscreen which keeps our bodies from absorbing ultraviolet rays. Fifteen minutes of sun a day is surely worth the benefits of deficiency!!! Dermal synthesis of vitamin D from cholesterol can only happen with sun exposure. We store vitamin D on dermal layer of skin so if you are constantly soaping up and putting lotion on your skin, your washing it away!!! I know what you’re thinking – she doesn’t want me to use soap ??? Maybe only soap extremities every other day. I sunscreen only when I know I will be in the sun for a long period of time. If you must lotion up, use shea butter. It has some vitamin D in it.

Find a good vitamin D supplement such as Biotics Research. I would avoid prescription based vitamin D. Why? You can’t patent a natural substance. So in order to make it available through a pharmacy, there has to be something else in it. (Just like I mentioned in my bio identical hormone articles). Not sure what, but I believe it will be better absorbed as natural as possible.

Most of us usually need more than FDA daily recommendations also. Start out with 2,000 units per day and see how you feel. You may gradually add more. I muscle test to know for sure what I need daily. Takes all the guessing out of everything. Remember – our bodies are in a constant state of change. What’s good today may not be next week.

Happy sunshine folks. Once again – the healing of nature on so many levels.
